A charming American

The remaining composers of the evening's programme are related not only by their American citizenship, but also by the fact that all three were very good pianists - with Leonard Bernstein also being an excellent interpreter of presumably "serious" music. His three dance episodes from the musical "On the Town" were performed entertainingly and with considerable pleasure, and they set the right mood for the George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue", probably his most autonomous work.

This is due not only to its timeless charm, but - above all - to its catchy melodies and sophisticated instrumentation. Brazilian pianist Elaine Rodrigues clearly had no problem with the technical brilliance demanded by this piece or the notoriously difficult repetitive figure in the piano cadenza. With a wealth of emotion and feeling, she apparently joined with the conductor and the orchestra in celebrating once again the birth of American music.
