Walliser Bote

Godfried Hoogeveen

A. Grichting - Walliser Bote  10 and 14 August 2010

In the four-set piano trio B major, D 898, in which besides the pianist Eliane Rodrigues, the cellist Godfried Hoogeveen and violinist Liviu Prunaru played, was the tight instrumental sound fascinating.

All the three soloists played harmoniously together in the slow, dreamy second movement, in the musically scherzo and in rhythmic allusion to Schubert's song "Skolie" and Rondo folk music, they showed sovereign tempo, dynamic and conceptual shaping of the transitions; in short, the fascination of music!

Instead of chief conductor Alexander Dmitriev, all concerts - the concert Rondo "Krakowiak" and both of Frédéric Chopin's piano concerts - were conducted by the pianist Eliane Rodrigues in the old style from the piano stool, played by an orchestra with a touch of the St. Petersburg music culture. Eliane, an agile slim person, did this with astonishing power and fantasy. She knew how to challenge the orchestra, let them work independently and then to fully develop all its potential and musical power. It really is an achievement that Saas-Fee can accommodate such a skilled orchestra.
This Chopin à la Rodrigues - Eliane played in a real-tour de force, the two piano concerts Opus 21, F minor and Opus 11, E minor was characterised by great power of movement, and by the stupendous piano technique of the woman in the red dress, a real knot of energy.

Mrs. Rodrigues showed her ability to shape intensive music especially in the more moderate movements, the F minor piano concert in the dreamy middle section, which is manifestly a tribute to a revered Chopin singer, a variation on a theme of sparkling streams. The second movement of the E minor piano concert, interpreted as a slow larghetto and captioned "Romanze", was also impressive. These movements, but also a lyrical encore following the audience's standing ovation, showed that Mrs Rodrigues has gained artistic and musical depth worldwide in the past five years, although she was no longer performing in Saas-Fee.
